Understand your heart: Everything you need to know about exercise ECG 🩺

Taking care of our heart is essential for a healthy and fulfilled life.

That's why we're proud to offer a crucial service: stress ECG.

This medical examination records your heart's response to the stress of exercise, making it possible to determine your risk of cardiovascular disease. 🫀

Thanks to qualified professionals, we carefully monitor electrical activity, blood pressure and heart rate while you work out on a treadmill.

Take the time to learn about this essential procedure to protect the health of your heart.

What is a stress ECG?

A stress electrocardiogram (ECG) records your heart's response to the stress of exercise. 🏃🏻‍♀️

A Stress ECG can determine your risk of cardiovascular disease.

The test is carried out by a doctor or qualified technician.

It will learn how much your heart can handle before an abnormal rhythm occurs or blood flow to your heart muscle weakens.

A stress ECG measures the electrical activity, blood pressure and heart rate of your heart while you exercise. 💪🏻

This test takes place on a treadmill.

Difference between an exercise ECG and a resting ECG

The stress ECG and the resting ECG are two crucial cardiac examinations, but they differ considerably in their approach and aims. 🎯

Exercise ECG is performed while the patient performs progressive exercise on a treadmill, allowing observation of the heart's response to the stress of physical activity.

This examination assesses cardiac function under stress, detecting any abnormalities that might not be visible at rest. 😴

In contrast, the resting ECG is performed when the patient is motionless, often lying down, to observe the heart in a state of calm.

This helps identify heart problems that may be present even in the absence of physical exertion.

These two types of ECG are complementary and play a crucial role in the early diagnosis and monitoring of cardiac problems.

They provide doctors with invaluable information for assessing an individual's overall cardiovascular health, and for providing the right care to protect the heart throughout life.

How the test

For carry out the testIt is recommended that you have been fasting for two (2) hours. 🚫🌮

It's actually easier and safer to perform the stress ECG on a lighter stomach.

Other recommendations may include avoiding caffeine before the exam, wearing appropriate shoes for exercise, and discussing your medications with your doctor.

We recommend that you discuss any concerns you may have with your technician before the examination.

First, our technician will clean ten (10) small areas on your chest to attach electrodes, small flat tights that will be connected to an electrocardiogram monitor.

This monitor records the electrical activity of your heart during the examination. 🩻

Once these electrodes are attached, you'll walk on a treadmill that gradually increases in speed or resistance.

The goal is to reach your target heart rate, or if you have symptoms that indicate you should stop (chest pain, change in blood pressure, etc.).

Heart rate, rhythm and blood pressure are monitored in real time throughout the examination. 🕦

Once the exercise is complete, you may be asked to remain still or lie down for a while with the monitors in place.

The person in charge of your examination can monitor any abnormalities as your heart rate and breathing return to normal.

Total examination time is approximately one (1) hour.

FAQ

What is a stress ECG?

A stress electrocardiogram (ECG) records the heart's electrical response during exercise (often on a treadmill). It enables us to assess how the heart reacts to physical stress, and to detect abnormalities that would not be visible at rest.

How does an exercise ECG differ from a resting ECG?

Resting ECGs are performed while the patient is motionless (often lying down), enabling observation of cardiac activity without physical strain. Stress ECGs, on the other hand, require a gradual effort to observe how the heart reacts under stress. The two tests are complementary.

How is the exam prepared and conducted?

- It is recommended to fast for about 2 hours before the examination.
- You should also avoid caffeine, wear appropriate footwear for exercise, and inform the team of your medications.
- A dozen electrodes are placed on the chest to capture electrical activity.
- The patient walks or runs on a treadmill which gradually increases in intensity until a target pace is reached, or until symptoms appear (shortness of breath, pain, etc.).
- After exercise, you may be asked to remain still to monitor recovery.
- The total examination time is approximately 1 hour.

What are the objectives / why have a stress ECG?

This examination helps to :
- determine your risk of cardiovascular disease;
- detect abnormal heart rhythms or insufficient blood flow to the heart muscle;
- assess the heart's ability to respond to controlled physical effort.

Are there any contraindications or risks to be aware of?

The page does not explicitly mention any contraindications, but it is suggested that you discuss them with the technician or doctor before the examination, especially if you have heart symptoms or are undergoing treatment.

A potential risk is the appearance of symptoms (chest pain, shortness of breath, changes in blood pressure) during exercise, which may necessitate stopping the test.

THE STRESS ECG SERVICE IS FREE OF CHARGE, AND IT TAKES APPROXIMATELY ONE WEEK TO OBTAIN AN APPOINTMENT.
